How does your car insurance bill compare to the DMV metro area average?

With what feels like ever rising costs of living, it’s no surprise that car insurance in the DMV area has also seen a sharp increase in recent months.

The average car insurance rates for 25 year old Virginia residents range from $2,218 for full coverage and $747 for minimum coverage annually.

For Maryland residents, this range increases from $2,647 for full coverage and $1,133 for minimum coverage annually.

Of course, other factors like the type of car you drive, if you have a history of accidents, your age, and more will affect your personal car insurance rate. But don’t panic! Fortunately for you, there are several ways you can reduce your car insurance bill in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV metro) areas.

Here are some tips for reducing your insurance rates just in time for your summer road trips:

1. Shop Around

There are lots of different insurance agencies, so make sure you’re comparing rates to make sure you’re getting the best deal! USAA, Travelers, Erie, Geico, and Nationwide tend to have the lowest rates, but websites like this can help you find the best fit for you in DC, Maryland, or Virginia.

2. Choose Your Car Wisely

The make, model, and age of your car will affect the rate of your car insurance, and is something to consider when buying your next ride. The least expensive cars to insure include Subarus, Mazdas, and Hondas.

3. Only Get What You Need

Insurance plans offer many coverage options, so make sure you’re only picking what makes sense for you. For example, if you don’t drive often, some companies offer coverage by the mile!

4. Ask About Discounts

Check with your insurance company and see if there are any additional discounts available. Many insurers offer accident forgiveness, student coverage, safe driving discounts, paperless discounts, benefits for Veterans, and more.

Also ask about DMV area metro affinity discounts for members of certain organizations, government employee rate, alumni associations, or professional groups.

5. Maintain a Good Driving Record

Get rewarded for your good driving! Most Insurance companies offer lower rates to drivers with clean records, so make sure you do your best to avoid speeding, texting and driving,  accidents and traffic violations to keep your premiums down.

6. Bundle Policies

Many insurance companies in DC, Maryland, and Virginia offer discounts if you bundle multiple policies, such as auto and home insurance, with them. If you own or rent your home or have other vehicles, it’s worth asking if bundling can save you money!

7. Improve Your Credit Score

In many states, insurers use credit scores to determine rates. Improving your credit score can result in lower premiums. Build your credit, and then make sure to make payments on time to help keep your scores low and your insurance rate down!

8. Keep Continuous Coverage

Continuously having auto insurance coverage without any lapses can lead to lower premiums over time in the DMV metro area.

Also, make sure to regularly review your insurance coverage and assess whether adjustments are needed based on changes in your driving habits, vehicle value, or other factors.

With summer almost here in the DMV, we hope you can use these strategies to reduce your car insurance costs, and have a little more cash in your pocket for some fun in the sun!
