Is your car staying cool enough?

We take for granted our car’s air conditioning (AC) systems until they stop working. Then, you or your family could be stuck up a road without a breeze!

Heat got you down?

We take for granted our car’s air conditioning (AC) systems until they stop working. Then, you or your family could be stuck up a road without a breeze!

Stay cool this summer by keeping an eye on possible AC issues and taking note of how you can get back on the road in comfort.

1. Refrigerant Leak

Problem: The most common issue with AC systems is a refrigerant leak. Without enough refrigerant, the AC can't cool the air.

Fix: Use a UV dye or electronic leak detector to find the source of the leak. Once the leak is identified, repair or replace the faulty component (e.g., hoses, seals, or the condenser). Recharge the system with the appropriate amount of refrigerant.

2. Compressor Issues

Problem: The AC compressor is responsible for pressurizing the refrigerant and circulating it through the system. If it fails, the AC won't work properly.

Fix: Check for signs of compressor failure like loud noises, inability to turn on, or the presence of leaks. If the compressor is faulty, it needs to be replaced. This is often a job best left to professionals due to the complexity and specific tools required.

3. Electrical Problems

Problem: Electrical issues, such as blown fuses, faulty relays, or damaged wiring, can prevent the AC system from working.

Fix: Inspect and replace any blown fuses or faulty relays. Check for any visible signs of damaged or disconnected wiring and repair or replace as necessary.

4. Clogged Expansion Valve or Orifice Tube

Problem: The expansion valve or orifice tube regulates the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. If clogged, it can restrict the flow and reduce cooling efficiency.

Fix: Identify if the valve is clogged by checking for poor cooling performance and inconsistent temperature. Clean or replace the expansion valve or orifice tube to ensure proper refrigerant flow.

5. Faulty Blower Motor

Problem: The blower motor is responsible for pushing air through the AC system. If it fails, there will be little to no airflow from the vents.

Fix: Check if the blower motor is running. Listen for unusual noises or feel for weak airflow. Replace the blower motor if it's not up to speed. Also, check and replace the cabin air filter if needed.

6. Condensate Drain Blockage

Problem: The condensate drain removes moisture from the evaporator. If it's blocked, water can back up and leak into the passenger compartment.

Fix: Find the condensate drain, usually located under the vehicle near the firewall. Clear any debris or blockage from the drain using compressed air or a flexible brush.

Consistent maintenance can also help keep your car's AC system running smoothly. While some fixes, like checking and replacing fuses, can be done by car owners, others, such as replacing a compressor or dealing with refrigerant, are best handled by professional mechanics to ensure safety and proper system care.
