Most autos and trucks driving on our roads and highways have to pass a VA Emissions Inspection. That is the case for nearly all Alexandria, VA vehicles unless they fall outside the categories determined by the VA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The state divides auto and truck categories by the fuel they consume. Every vehicle in them must Pass the inspection. Each inspection is valid for two years.
Diesel-powered passenger and property-hauling autos and trucks that have a manufacturer’s Designated Gross Weight Rating of 8,500 pounds or less and are 1997 or newer models. If the vehicle is heavier than that or it is a 1996 model of older, then it receives a Waiver from the VA DMV.
Gasoline-powered passenger and property-hauling autos and trucks also need to receive a Pass if they have a manufacturer’s Designated Gross Weight Rating of 10,000 pounds or less and are a model less than 25 years old from before January 1st of the current calendar year. As an example, a 2001 Ford Mustang falls into this category while a 1992 Mercedes moving van is one year outside the cut-off of January 1st 2018 and receives a Waiver from the VA Emissions Inspection for their Alexandria, VA vehicle.
These requirements are mandatory for all category-meeting vehicles for all residents in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, and Stafford Counties or the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park.
