The anti-lock braking system or ABS improves the function of disc brakes. The system provides a safer ride as the driver applies the brakes by preventing the wheels from seizing or locking up. This action greatly reduces the threat of uncontrolled skids, especially on rain-slick pavement.
Wiygul Automotive Clinics recommend every owner have their auto’s brakes inspected annually. The routine check provides our technicians with an opportunity to diagnose and fix minor problems before they become more expensive issues. For Ft. Washington, MD autos, that can be especially true for ABS Brake system repairs.
To even diagnose a potential problem with the ABS, service technicians need a Controller Scanning Device. This tool receives a trouble code from the auto’s ABS Control Module which provides data on the possible problem. The technician then runs through an inspection checklist.
The first item he starts with is the fuse. He removes and tests it for functionality. If it tests positive, then he examines the socket on the fuse harness for corrosion. He sprays the socket with a contact cleaner, wipes it dry, and then performs a visual inspection. If he does not find corrosion or any sign of physical damage, the technician wipes the fuse clean and plugs it back into the socket.
Next, he lifts the auto on a rack to examine the wheel sensors. The technician loosens the lug nuts on each tire to examine and ensure each one is functioning correctly. They are mounted next to the wheel bearing assembly and provide rotation speed on each wheel to the ABS Control Module.
Our technician checks the sensor and connecting wires to see if they are physically damaged or if there are any loose connections. Before lowering the car, he also examines each wheel bearing assembly for any damage that could interfere with the wheel sensors. If he finds any damage, our clinics replace everything strictly to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
