With few exceptions, most Herndon, VA cars use disc brakes. The Anti-Lock Brake System or ABS improves their function and increase the safety for a driver and passengers. It accomplishes both when the driver applies the brakes by preventing the wheels from seizing or locking up, particularly on turns. This action reduces the chance of uncontrolled skids, especially on rain-slick pavement.
Wiygul Automotive Clinics recommend every car owner have their brakes inspected at least annually. The brake check allows our technicians to examine and fix minor issues before they become a more severe, and expensive, problem. Especially for an ABS Brake system, repair is always more expensive than routine maintenance.
To properly diagnose a possible ABS problem, every technician uses a specialized tool called a Controller Scanning Device. Our technicians use one to ensure correct function and, with a trouble code sent by the auto’s ABS Control Module, determine needed repairs.
If the ABS warning light is already on, a technician first checks the fuse. If it tests OK, then he looks for corrosion on the fuse harness. He sprays a contact cleaner on the harness, wipes it clean, and does a visual check. If he finds no corrosion issues or physical damage, he cleans the fuse and reinserts it into the harness.
Our next task is to examine the wheel sensors. They are mounted adjacent to the wheel bearing assembly and inform the ABS Control Module how fast each wheel rotates if they are sending and receiving data correctly. To thoroughly examine them, every Wiygul technician lifts the car on a rack and loosens the lug nuts on each tire.
He examines the wheel sensor and the connecting wires to determine there is no physical damage and that they are not loose. Before lower the car, the technician also examines each wheel bearing assembly for damage that might interfere with the sensors. If there is, he replaces them according to each manufacturer’s recommendation for that type of auto.
