Auto emissions testing is required by the Maryland Vehicle Administration (MVA) every two years for most Waldorf, MD cars and trucks. At Wiygul Automotive Clinics, we employ Master Certified Emissions Technicians with extensive training and maintain the approved diagnostic equipment needed to perform both the Idle Tailpipe and Gas Cap Test and the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Test.
The Idle Tailpipe and Gas Cap Test is required for:
Model years 1977 and newer heavy-duty vehicles 8,501 - 26,000 pounds. Our technicians first drive these larger vehicles at highway speeds for at least 20 minutes before the test to warm up the exhaust system and then take a test sample. A failed test occurs under the following conditions:
If the gas cap is missing, damaged, or is the wrong one for the vehicle
If the catalytic converter is damaged or missing
If the exhaust system has leaks or holes that prevent taking a valid exhaust sample
The OBD test is required for:
Model years 1996 and newer passenger and light-duty trucks vehicles
Model years 2008 and newer heavy-duty vehicles less than 14,000 pounds
Technicians use a scan tool to connect to the vehicle's diagnostic computer. It checks the system for failing emissions control components. Malfunctioning components permit the vehicle's emissions to exceed allowable limits or can cause a false pass or fail.
As a vehicle owner, there are two things you need to be aware of before bringing in your Waldorf, MD car or truck for emissions testing. First, make certain the amber-colored "check engine," or similar warning light is not on. If it is, the vehicle cannot pass the OBD test. You need to have it checked and repaired at your dealer or a certified repair facility like Wiygul Automotive.
Second, if you had auto repairs that required the battery be disconnected, you need to drive the vehicle normally for a week before bringing it for testing. A week resets the emissions monitor components to their normal setting. If your vehicle also has a driver’s door which does not close properly or a misaligned shift indicator, the vehicle cannot be tested.
If it fails auto emissions testing, you need to have your Waldorf, MD vehicle repaired and then retest as quickly as possible. If it fails again, the MVA can issue a waiver. Submit the original receipts showing the cost was $450.00 at least for emissions-related repairs. They must be performed no more than 30 days before the first inspection and no later than 120 days after the last one. The waiver is good for two years from the original assigned test date.
